How to use our Surname Research page
Our Surname Research page allows you to search for a name to see if a PennPalAm member is also researching that name.
You can scroll down the alphabetical list keeping in mind that it contains both English and German spellings. (Note that you can reverse the alphabetical sort order of the names by clicking the Arrow to the right of "Surname" at the top of that column.)
The simplest way to get started however, is to use the Search Surname box in the upper left corner.
- Enter your search term and click the Magnifying Glass. By default, your results will include Alternate Spellings of the name.
(You can choose to not allow Alternate Spellings by selecting "No" on the drop-down list below the search box.)
- Clear your search term by clicking the Broom.
(Note: Your results may contain a surname more than once if two or more members have entered this surname.)
- The Actions column contains two icons. The Eye icon displays the details shown in the columns and the Envelope icon will appear if the member has elected to participate in Surname Research with their membership account email.
- Clicking the Envelope icon, will open an inquiry form. Enter your name, email address and a short message about your inquiry.
- Below the Subject field click in the box labled "Validation – check this box.” A code will appear. Copy the code into the box labled “and enter code.”
- Finally, click the Send Email button in the upper right. An email will be sent directly to the member associated with this surname. If the surname appears more than once, you may choose to contact all members associated with that surname.
